chicago: the trip of a lifetime

orchestra hall, chicago

from march 26-31, my school band was given the chance to perform at a prestigious hall, the chicago orchestra hall. certain schools around the country were given invitations to perform. out of the 20 or band schools that were invited, our school was the only middle school; all the other schools were high schools. our school was given the amazing opportuniy, and we ranked third out of all the schools. our band had so much fun during the trip because we are such a closely knit group, everyone in our band is friends with each other and some of my closest friends are from band.

this doesn't go with the text, but i am so glad to have these friends with me. love you guys :)
love you guys 🙂 i don’t know what i would do without you

GETTING READY
to get ready for this trip, our band rehearsed as a group every tuesday afternoon, wednesday morning, and thursday morning starting from around the beginning of the year. the people in band are my closest friends, and i get to see them everyday all in one group, which is such a plus. whenever i’m talking about band, i slip into this almost natural habit of saying “we”, meaning all my friends in band. this let everyone get to know each other and bond. the things we did were so fun; we bought candy and chips every week, running to and from the vending machines to get back to the band room in time, and spent free time talking and playing cards. me and two of my closer friends started doing lemonade stands whenever we had free time. as the rehearsals went on, and the date started to get closer and closet, the anticipation levels went up, and everyone started thinking of what to pack. getting ready for chicago was stressful for me because i had NO IDEA what to pack. i finished packing the night before at 2 am.

the plane was so pretty. :)
the plane was so pretty.

THE DEPARTURE
on the 26, we had to arrive at the airport at 5:30 am. which meant i had to get up at 3. within our group, there was so much excitedness, anticipation, and nervousness. on the plane, it was surreal. the plane was above everything and it was as if you could see the whole world. when we landed, it was still surreal, and i was in shock. the weather was amazing, cold enough that it’s barely snowing, but i was okay with two layers and a coat.

THE TRIP
during the trip, our school took one coach bus. it was nice to only have totake one bus; there were only 50 people total, including teachers and chaperones. it was more fun because there was no awkwardness between us, only everyone jamming out to music, singing, and playing games with each other. we went to the usual sight-seeing places; my favorite was the bean and visiting the skyline.
our days were packed to the maximum, and we squeezed rehearsal time wherever we could, which meant that we had to practice in our pajamas sometimes. at the hotel, my room was so much fun, and we really got to bond and get closer over the trip. whether it was prank calling some of the other rooms, waving to others from the window, running around in the hallways, having tickle fights in the middle of the night, talking until 2 am, or doing bad makeup on each other, our room was never dull.

THE PERFORMANCE
we had two days that we had to dress up and be fancy for: the banquet and the performance at orchestra hall. the banquet was for everyone who was attending the festival, and the performance was to, well perform. getting ready was hectic yet enjoyable because the girls were running up and down the halls, trying to get ready, while the boys watched on, fully ready. the banquet was held in a ballroom, and the set up was amazing. when we got to orchestra hall, everyone was so nervous. we were guided to a practice room, where we set up and tuned. we were then sent to the actual stage just minutes after. everything was happening so fast. we performed, and we did amazing. obviously, there were things that we did wrong in the pieces, but i think it was our best performance.

GOING HOME
the day after our performance was the day to go home. this was the one day where the time we had to wake up was up to us; we just had to get down to the lobby by 10. we rode to the airport, and got to the terminal. at the airport, i kept thinking to myself, “is the trip really over? it feels like the trip is about to start”. the saying time flies when you’re having fun was perfect for that situation. our band was so close, new friendships were made, and everyone bonded.
